BMI Calculator - Calculate Your Body Mass Index
What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple measure that uses your height and weight to work out if your weight is healthy. The BMI calculation divides an adult's weight in kilograms by their height in metres squared.
BMI Range | Category | Health Risk |
Below 18.5 | Underweight | May indicate malnutrition or health issues |
18.5 - 24.9 | Normal weight | Healthy weight range |
25 - 29.9 | Overweight | Increased risk of health problems |
30 and above | Obese | High risk of serious health conditions |
BMI = weight (kg) / (height (m) × height (m))
For example, if you weigh 70 kg and are 170 cm tall:
- Height in meters = 170 cm ÷ 100 = 1.7 m
- BMI = 70 ÷ (1.7 × 1.7) = 24.2
Understanding Your BMI Results
- Underweight (BMI < 18.5):</strong> May indicate insufficient nutrition or underlying health conditions
- Normal weight (BMI 18.5-24.9):</strong> Generally associated with the lowest health risks
- Overweight (BMI 25-29.9):</strong> May increase risk of health problems like heart disease and diabetes
- Obese (BMI ≥ 30):</strong> Associated with increased risk of serious health conditions
Important Notes
- BMI is a screening tool but not a diagnostic of body fatness or health
- BMI may not be accurate for athletes, pregnant women, or the elderly
- Consult a healthcare professional for personalized health advice
- Factors like muscle mass, age, sex, and ethnicity can influence BMI interpretation
